DESIGN EXPERIENCE
Even before finishing undergrad at Ohio State, my roommate and I started building HTML and FLASH websites. We built a small business, called Bobble Hat productions, and had several website clients. This enabled us both to go into graphic design full time after college. I worked at several internal marketing teams as well as with agencies.
On teams I gravitated towards emerging technologies and platforms. Early on, this meant learning to develop in HTML, Flash, Javascript, and PHP. In larger organizations I often would design, develop working web examples on my server, and hand over to IT to build it properly.
Even after transitioning to media mid-career, I put my design skills to use whether through promotional items or website design. Currently I enjoy designing promotional items like hats, tank tops, or coffee mugs.
DESIGN PRINCIPLES
In courses, I teach by CRAP: contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity. These are the building blocks when combined with a strong font hierarchy create sound graphic design.
My style is a clean but full coverage approach. My favorite design is a full coverage background, lots of negative space, and a clear message.
